My special medical interests include Flying Medicine, Travel Medicine, orthopaedics, sports medicine and asthma. In my own time I enjoy being an active private pilot and has been a member of the Stellenbosch Flying Club since 1993. I am an active mountain biker and does some road biking in the summer. My love for two wheels extends to motorcycles as both a rider and enthusiast. I enjoy the outdoors, travel, hiking, and mountaineering.

I was born and bred in Kroonstad. After matriculating at Kroonstad High School in 1995 I went on to study medicine and graduated with a MBChB in 2001 from the University of the Free State.
I gained invaluable experience as a houseman and community service doctor at Natalspruit Hospital in Alberton, and Bongani Hospital in Welkom respectively.
After a year working in Nottingham Nuffield Hospital in the UK, I spent many productive years as general practitioner at the Prince Albert Medical Clinic in Saskatchewan Canada from 2004 to 2011. In 2012 I responded to my homeland calling, and settled back in the Free State, running a solo general practice from 2012 to 2023. I relocated to Stellenbosch in 2024 and has integrated into the Stelkor family with enthusiasm.

Born and raised in Kimberley, I completed a BA degree with Law subjects before transitioning to fulfill my passion for medicine, graduating from the University of Pretoria and completing my hospital year in Cape Town. Since July 1987, I have practiced in Stellenbosch and has over 38 years of experience as a family doctor and sports enthusiast in this region.
I specialise in family and general medicine, with a particular fondness for pediatric care, influenced by my role as a grandfather. I have built generational relationships in “Stellies” where I am proud to live and work. Outside medicine, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, watching sports, and listening to classical music.

In private practice in Stellenbosch since 2009.I started my journey in a small Highveld town in Mpumalanga called Evander, where I also matriculated in 1998. I completed my medical degree at Stellenbosch in 2003, after which I did my internship and community service in Kallie de Haas Hospital in Potchefstroom. I was fortunate enough to join my father (also a GP) in private practice in Secunda in 2006. After obtaining my Medical Council of Canada licentiate, I joined Stelkor Doctors in 2009. Being part of a family of doctors made me appreciate what a privilege it is to work with people. I feel humbled to be allowed to share in their illness, joy, sadness, struggles, pain and all the other emotions and complexities of their lives. I can say with honesty that I truly love my job.
Raising two beautiful daughters gave me insight into the challenges that parents face, and that is why I particularly enjoy paediatric medicine in a GP practice setting. Sports medicine and orthopaedics is also one of my interests, as sport has always been a part of my life.
Living in Stellies, and being a Matie myself, student health lies close to my heart as students bring a vibrant energy to our town and adds to its character.
When I am not caring for my patients, you can find me spending time with my awesome family, exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the beauty of nature, either trail running, mountain biking or hiking. I believe that a healthy work-life balance is essential and I strive to inspire my patients to prioritise their own health and mental wellbeing.

Special interests: Women’s Health, Psychiatry, ADHD, Menopause, and all aspects of general medical practice.
“Ek het grootgeword in Evander, Mpumalanga, waar my pa ‘n GP was vir 35 jaar. Ek en my twee broers het almal dokters geword en om die kuns van medisyne te beoefen en te bemeester sal altyd vir my ‘n voorreg en ‘n strewe bly. (Dr Tinus van Zijl is my broer)”.
Although I like the variety that general practice brings (variety is the spice of life!) I am married to a psychiatrist and my interest in this field naturally developed around morning coffee and holiday camp fires! ADHD is a field within psychiatry that I have a keen interest in. In recent years the space where women’s health and psychiatry converge has also fascinated me. The effect of the menopause and other hormonal changes like premenstrual disorders and the post-partum period on both the physical and psychological wellbeing of women has fueled my passion to further my knowledge and contribution in this field.
Hobbies: Parenting (I am a mother of three), Gardening, Travelling, Reading.

I graduated with a MBChB from Stellenbosch University in 1986, whereafter I specialised in and pursued my passion of family medicine to complete my MFam Med in 1992. I have been in private practice since then: firstly in Stellenbosch, with a short break to Kraaifontein. I have been back full time in Stellenbosch since 2000.
My medical interests encompass all aspects of Family Medicine, with a special focus on women’s wellness, rheumatology, and autoimmune disorders. In my free time, I love spending time outdoors in fresh air and nature. My hobbies include hiking, travelling, and gardening.
Filosofie: “Die lewe is mooi – nie omdat dit perfek is nie, maar omdat daar altyd iets is om voor dankbaar te wees.”
